Activities in Chicago, Illinois
Looking for hotels near Chicago Riverwalk? The Penthouse at Grand Plaza is just a five-minute drive to the Chicago Riverwalk. It is also easily accessible through public transportation or Uber.
Called the city’s “Second Lakefront,” the Chicago Riverwalk is a pedestrian waterfront on the south bank of the Chicago River. It contains some of the best Chicago restaurants, seating, boat rentals (highly recommended), and other activities.
It was recently expanded to nine blocks (completed in 2016). As a conjunction with The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), the start of the Riverwalk began as an extension of Wacker Drive with reconstruction projects in 2001 when the street was purposely relocated to allow for the development of the walk.
In a decade long construction, the plans incorporated four districts with unique themes initially while bringing in another six additions later when the city obtained $98 Million from the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) for design, engineering and construction.
Plans were announced with the full intention of connecting a path from Lake Michigan west towards Lake Street.
