Referred to as the “landscape under glass,” it has remained a favorite of Chicago ever since the mid-1920s when attendance reached over a half a million visitors per year.
However, the history of this place dates back to the 1880s when these three small Victorian glass houses were converted into Chicago’s West Park Systems by architect Jens Jensen with Hitchings & CO (a New York engineering firm specializing in greenhouses).
This attraction consists of eight rooms that are individually-themed. They provide education on topics of composting, bee business, and demonstrations on the process of plant energy (in the “Sugar from the Sun” room).
Gaze at Chihuly’s 16 yellow lily pads that are permanently displayed in the “Persian Pool” room. Book a corporate event or wedding in the “Horticulture Hall” room.
Hours of operation are daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with extended hours on Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Best of all—admission is FREE. Donation is suggested.
